Msgr. José H. Gómez, Archbishop of Los Angeles, appeals to the generosity of the faithful and attention to those most in need.

Newsroom (August 25, 2021 10:29, Gaudium Press) Archbishop José H. Gómez, of Los Angeles and president of the United States Bishops’ Conference, has addressed a letter to the other bishops of his country, encouraging them to collect in each diocese and send humanitarian aid to Haiti, after the earthquake that devastated the already suffering island last August 14 and the passage of Hurricane Grace that aggravated the situation.

“It is likely that the Haitian people will experience continued hardship in the coming weeks as recovery and reconstruction efforts begin,” the Archbishop said, also expressing his concern for the ecclesial communities present on the island, where schools, parishes and medical centers have been destroyed.

The funds raised, according to an explanatory note published on the bishop’s website, will be used to support the pastoral needs and reconstruction of the Church, and also to collaborate with the efforts of Catholic Relief Services (CRS), which is the Caritas agency of the USA.

CRS has provided emergency care in Haiti, where it has been active for more than 60 years. In fact, the organization provides temporary housing and is and will continue to build livelihoods, starting with education, teaching agriculture, and strengthening the health care system.

The episcopate also indicated that the USCCB Subcommittee of the Annual National Collection for the Church in Latin America (CLA) has approved donations of up to $10,000 for the three most affected dioceses in Haiti.
