All possible medications and therapies were used to save the life of the Holy Father, which risked damage to the Pontiff’s other organs.
Newsroom (25/03/2025, Gaudium Press) In a recent interview with the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera, Dr. Sergio Alfieri, the head of the medical team that treated Pope Francis during his hospitalization, gave detailed insights into the Pope’s health crisis and recovery.
The Worst Moment: Pope Francis’ Health at Risk
Dr. Alfieri recalled the critical moment on February 28 when the Pope’s condition worsened significantly. The doctor explained that Pope Francis faced a life-threatening situation, which led to emotional moments for those around him. “People who, during this period of hospitalization, sincerely love him as a father,” Dr. Alfieri shared. “We all feared the worst and knew there was a chance he might not survive.”
A Difficult Decision: Life or Letting Go
One of the most challenging aspects of Pope Francis’ health crisis was the decision to continue aggressive treatment. Dr. Alfieri revealed that the medical team faced a choice between halting treatment or pushing forward with high-risk therapies that could have further harmed other organs. Ultimately, the Pope himself made the decision to proceed with treatment.
Pope Francis’ Request: Transparency and Truth
Dr. Alfieri emphasized that Pope Francis was committed to transparency from the beginning of his hospitalization. “From day one, he asked us to tell the truth about his condition,” Dr. Alfieri recalled. The Pope’s desire for truth ensured that all information shared with the public was accurate and consistent with his wishes.
The doctor concluded by acknowledging the deep sense of care and devotion from those around the Pope, who treated him as a beloved family member during this challenging time.
