After the surprise admission of the Pontiff to the Gemelli on Sunday, several actions of the previous days are now explained.

News Desk (07/07/2021 18:30, Gaudium Press)The Vatican press office reported the good progress of Francis’ health after the operation performed at the Gemelli Polyclinic last Sunday. The surgery did not take three hours as expected, but apparently five hours.

“The post-operative state of His Holiness Pope Francis remains regular and satisfactory. The Holy Father continues to feed normally and has suspended parenteral therapy,” Matteo Bruni, director of the Holy See Press Office, said in the bulletin released today.

“The definitive histological examination confirmed a severe diverticular stenosis in the colon, with signs of a sclerosing diverticulitis.”

Finally, Bruni reports that “Pope Francis is moved by the numerous messages and affection received in recent days and expresses his gratitude for the closeness and prayer.”

Several things are explained

The Pontiff’s operation was certainly scheduled in advance, and certainly preceded by several necessary diagnostic evaluations.

Although the initial forecast was for 7 days recovery in hospital, it is clear that the Pontiff’s health will need a little more time to return to normal, given also that it was apparently not a simple laparoscopy.

One now understands what Matteo Bruni said when he announced on 2 July that the pontiff’s general audiences would be suspended in July for the “usual summer holidays” and would resume on 4 August. Of course, the reason for this pause was not the torrid Roman heat, but the Pope’s operation and his post-operative period.

It is now also understood that the Pontiff anticipated some more special audiences, such as the one he had with the president of the German Bishops’ Conference, Bishop Batzing, who had been instructed to bring forward his visit to the Vatican since the Pope would not have such audiences in July.

For now, and according to information from the only source – the Vatican Press Office – the Pope is recovering in the best way.

Of course, there is no lack of suspicious and even skeptical people, given the extreme discretion with which all the information is handled.

A discretion that seems to correspond to the wishes of Francis, who does not want his health problems to become world news. A wish of the Pontiff that is very difficult to fulfill, because he is who he is.
