Basilica of Guadalupe begins Extraordinary Jubilee Year

During the Extraordinary Jubilee Year, which will end on November 20, 2022, on the Solemnity of Christ the King of the Universe, the faithful will be able to obtain a Plenary Indulgence.

Newsroom – Mexico (November 19, 2021, 9:00 PM, Gaudium Press) Through a ceremony held last Sunday, November 14, Cardinal Carlos Aguiar Retes, Archbishop of Mexico, blessed and opened the Holy Door of the Basilica of Guadalupe, thus beginning the Extraordinary Jubilee Year.

Plenary Indulgence to the faithful

The event took place on the occasion of the centennial of the bombing of the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe on November 14, 1921, in which miraculously the mantle of San Juan Diego remained undamaged.

During the Extraordinary Jubilee Year, which will end on November 20, 2022, on the Solemnity of Christ the King of the Universe, the faithful will be able to obtain a Plenary Indulgence following the usual conditions established by the Apostolic Penitentiary.

Bombing of the statue of Our Lady of Guadalupe

On November 14, 1921, a man placed a bomb hidden in a bouquet of flowers in front of the sacred image. The detonation caused damage to the altar, some marble sculptures and a bronze crucifix. The glass protecting the image of Our Lady was not damaged.

At the time, Mexicans expressed their indignation about the attack, because besides being a grave sacrilegious act, it also threatened the identity of Mexicans, since Our Lady of Guadalupe was the flag with which Father Miguel Hidalgo, invited the people to join the fight for the independence of the country. It also constituted an antecedent to the War of the Cristeros. (EPC)
