The Diocese of Palmares had been vacant since 18 July 2020, when its titular Bishop Henrique Soares da Costa died.
News Desk (09/06/2021 18:30, Gaudium Press) On the morning of Wednesday, 9 June, Pope Francis appointed Dom Fernando Barbosa dos Santos as the new Bishop of Palmares (PE), transferring him from the Prelature of Tefé (AM).
The Diocese of Palmares had been vacant since 18 July 2020, when its titular, Dom Henrique Soares da Costa, died. Since then, pastoral care has been under the responsibility of the diocesan administrator, Father Norberto Penzkofer.
Bishop Fernando Barbosa dos Santos
Born on 5 March 1967 in Sertânia, in the Diocese of Pesqueira, Pernambuco, Dom Fernando Barbosa dos Santos studied philosophy and theology at the Regional Pastoral Institute of Olinda (PE), specializing in Literature at the University of Pernambuco – Arcoverde Campus. On 11 February 1995, he made his religious profession in the Congregation of the Mission (Lazarists) and was ordained a priest on 20 January 1996.
He was parish vicar of St. Anthony in Quixeramobim, Diocese of Quixadá (CE) (1996-1998); formator in the Propedeutic Seminary of the Lazarist Fathers (1998-1999) and parish administrator of St. Peter and St. Paul in Fortaleza (CE) (1999-2000); formator in the Redemptoris Mater Seminary of the Archdiocese of Belém (PA) (2000-2003); superior of the Lazarist Province of Fortaleza (CE) (2003-2006 and 2006-2009); pastor of São José in Tucuruí, Diocese of Cametá (PA) (2009-2010); treasurer of the Lazarist Province of Fortaleza (2009-2014) and pastor of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios in the same city of Ceará.
In 2002 he participated in a Vincentian spiritual formation in Paris, France. Until 2013, he served as coordinator of the West Sector in the São José Region of the Archdiocese of Fortaleza and is currently the advisor for the Youth Centre of the São José Region, also in the Archdiocese of Fortaleza. On 14 May 2014, he was appointed bishop of the Prelature of Tefé and received episcopal ordination on 28 August of the same year. (EPC)
