In Baltimore, the bishops of the United States voted to include Mother Teresa of Calcutta in the country’s liturgical calendar.

Newsroom (22/11/2021 1:30 PM Gaudium Press) Gathered for their annual fall assembly, the bishops of the United States took the opportunity to vote to include a feast to Mother Teresa of Calcutta in the liturgical calendar.

The meeting, which took place in Baltimore, Maryland, last November 17, voted on the inclusion of the feast of St. Teresa of Calcutta in the liturgical celebrations of the United States.

In all, there were 213 votes in favor, 1 abstention, and no votes against. The day chosen for the optional memorial would be the anniversary of the her death, on September 5.

However, it is up to the Congregation for Divine Worship and Discipline for the Sacraments to validate and approve the decision of the American bishops.

Mother Teresa of Calcutta was a religious missionary in India. In 1950, she founded the Missionaries of Charity, which quickly grew and spread throughout the world.

In 1979, Mother Teresa was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize and in 1996 she received honorary American citizenship.

She died on September 5, 1997, at the age of 87. She was beatified six years after her death. Pope Francis canonized her on September 4, 2016. (FM)
