On February 8, 2025, Cardinal Jaime Spengler, President of the National Conference of Bishops of Brazil (CNBB), officially took possession of the title of the Church of Saint Gregory the Great in Magliana Nova, Rome. This solemn ceremony was attended by several ecclesiastical authorities and clergy members, marking an important moment in the cardinal’s ministry.

Does the Teaching of Jesus Captivate You Today?

In his homily, Cardinal Spengler focused on the centrality of the Word of God in the Church’s evangelizing mission. He stressed, “The Word is light for our steps,” and invited the faithful to reflect: “Does the teaching of Jesus captivate you today?” His message emphasized that personal engagement with the Word is key to spiritual renewal.

Community Renewal Through the Word of God

Cardinal Spengler also addressed the importance of community renewal. He affirmed, “If we want to renew our community, we are invited to start with the Word.” He further emphasized that all faithful are integral to the Church, reinforcing their collective identity and responsibility.

Vocational Call and Evangelizing Mission

A crucial aspect of Cardinal Spengler’s message was the relationship between vocation and evangelization. He underscored that “No one can evangelize if they are not called, and no one can consider themselves called if they do not evangelize.”

Advice for Youth and the Scout Movement

The cardinal shared advice with young people and children from the Scout movement who contributed to the liturgical singing: “First: Study! Second: Study! Third: Study!” This emphasis on education was a key component of his message to the future leaders of the Church.

Connection to the Pope and the Diocese of Rome

The title given to Cardinal Spengler symbolizes his connection with the Pope and the Diocese of Rome. The title had been vacant since August 26, 2023, when Cardinal Geraldo Majella Agnelo passed away. Cardinal Spengler’s appointment marks a significant moment in both his spiritual journey and the Church’s ongoing mission in the world.

Cardinal Spengler, the Archbishop of Porto Alegre, is also the President of the CNBB and CELAM. He is involved in several Vatican dicasteries, further strengthening his role in global Church affairs.
