Despite having received two doses of the vaccine plus the booster shot, both men have tested positive for the virus.
Newsroom (18/01/2022 7:30 AM, Gaudium Press) Two more top Vatican officials have tested positive for Covid. Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican Secretary of State, and Archbishop Edgar Peña Parra, his deputy, are the two latest prelates to have contracted the virus, with Cardinal Parolin reportedly experiencing symptoms.
As Secretary of State, Cardinal Parolin is the second most powerful figure at the Vatican, outranked only by the Pope. Archbishop Peña Parra, the substitute to the Secretariat of State, who also has direct access to the Pope, acts essentially as the chief of staff and is in charge of the daily administration of the Roman Curia.
The two join a growing list of Cardinals and Vatican officials who have tested positive for the virus in recent months.
