German Cardinal Gerhard Müller wrote for the site Kath.net regarding the so-called ‘German Synodal Way’.

Newsroom (24/06/2022 09:00, Gaudium Press) In a blistering new critique of the German Synodal Way, Cardinal Gerhard Müller, former Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, deplores the “monothematic (having a single, dominating theme) fixation on sexuality” as “an image of man without the living God” and “anthropological nihilism.”

Opining for the site kaht.net, the cardinal referred to the recently revealed words of the Pope to the president of the German episcopate, Bishop Georg Batzing : “In Germany there is a very good Protestant Church. We don’t need two.”

Loss of the Catholic hermeneutic

In Cardinal Müller’s opinion, the Pope points to the “loss of the Catholic hermeneutic (epistemology)“, “with which the committee of the ‘Synodal Way’, and also two thirds of the German episcopate, have not only entered into schism, but have directly contradicted the Catholic Creed apostolically and downgraded the adjective ‘Catholic‘ to a mere traditional phrase.”

On the criticism of the priesthood and priestly celibacy of the Synodal Way, the Cardinal stressed that the “ministry of bishops, priests and deacons” is not “absolutely biblically unsound and only a special or erroneous form of its own development,” “but the continuation of Christ’s mission from the Father (Jn 20:21) in the authority of the Holy Spirit (Acts 20:28).”

The tenacious struggle against the celibacy of priests and the infamous suspicion of charismatic celibacy, freely chosen by the Kingdom of Heaven, as the source and cause of sexual perversions up to criminal assaults on adolescents, is convincing proof of the estrangement from Catholic thought [of the Synodal Way] and in general of the denial of grace, which does not contradict nature but rather purifies, elevates and perfects it.”

Cardinal Müller has called for the Church in Germany to repent.
