In the last two months, there have been three kidnappings of priests in roadside ambushes in the country.

Priest shot while returning from his pastoral duties
As per a statement from Archbishop Augustine Akubeze, the priest met a tragic end when he was shot and killed while on his way back from running errands. His lifeless body was discovered on Agbor Road in Edo state’s Ikpoba Okha local government area.
The Archbishop affirmed that the appropriate security agency has been notified and is actively investigating the matter. Additionally, Bishop Augustine Akubeze expressed his prayers for the apprehension and prosecution of those responsible for this heinous act.
Religious persecution against Catholic priests in Nigeria
On June 9, a Holy Mass was conducted in the chapel of Bishop Kelly Pastoral Center to honor the soul of the slain priest. The Archbishop of Benin personally presided over the service.
Nigeria continues to be one of the perilous countries for Catholic priests. In the past two months, there have been no less than three instances of priests being kidnapped in roadside attacks. Father Charles Onomhoale Igechi received his ordination as a priest on August 13, 2022. (EPC)
