St Joseph’s Catholic University in Macau will be able to enroll students from mainland China, following a decision by the central government. 

China – Macau (September 25 2021 11:21 AM Gaudium Press) The Central government of China has authorized the University of Saint Joseph, located on the Chinese island of Macau, to receive students from the mainland.

As an experimental project, a total of four training programs will be able to enroll students from the mainland: postgraduate courses in architecture, business administration, information systems and science.

An act of trust

Stephen Morgan, rector of the University of Saint Joseph noted that he is “very conscious of the responsibility that the Central People’s Government has placed in USJ through this permission, and want to give every assurance of our gratitude and sincerity.”

The rector rejoiced at the government’s decision as he sees the university center as a “unique platform” for “co-operation between Chinese and Portuguese-speaking countries and as an example of Macao as a base for the harmonious exchange between the culture of the East and the West.” He added that he sees in the government’s decision “an opportunity to deepen partnerships, which until now have not been possible.”

Macau and the University

Macau has been a special administrative region of China since 1999. A Portuguese colony for more than 400 years the island was one of the last European colonies in the Far East. The University of Saint Joseph was founded in 1996 as the Macau Inter-University Institute by the Catholic University of Portugal and the Diocese of Macau.
