Christ the Redeemer Shrine Will Open a Museum in 2024

The Christ the Redeemer Museum is a legacy of the 90th Anniversary Celebration of the monument and is the first action on the road to the centennial.

Newsroom (12/08/2022 10:30 AM, Gaudium Press) The Christ the Redeemer Sanctuary, one of Brazil’s most famous postcards, will gain a museum that will tell the story of this important monument, visited annually by thousands of tourists from all over the world.

The Christ the Redeemer Museum, scheduled to open in 2024, will bring together a digital historical heritage built from a Collaborative Digital Collection. Among the content gathered will be documents and images shared by hundreds of people and organized by the Center of Collection and Memory of the Cristo Redentor Sanctuary.

A milestone in the history of the Christ the Redeemer Shrine

The rector of the Cristo Redentor Shrine, Father Omar, presided over a Holy Mass after which the cornerstone of the Cristo Redentor Museum, installed on the fourth floor of the Paineiras Visitors Center, was laid.

According to the priest, this celebration was “a milestone in the history of the Christ the Redeemer Shrine! The Christ the Redeemer Museum is a legacy of the 90th Anniversary Celebration of the monument and is the first action on the road to the centennial.”

One of the Seven Wonders of the World

The image of Christ the Redeemer was inaugurated on October 12, 1931, and was elected one of the seven wonders of the world. Located at the top of Corcovado mountain, Christ the Redeemer is 38 meters high (including the eight-meter pedestal) and weighs 1,145 tons. (EPC)
