New York and Washington propose activities to mark the 20th anniversary of the September 11 attack

United States  – New York (11/09/2021 18:30, Gaudium Press) During this week commemorating the 20th anniversary of the terrorist attacks of 11 September, various events have been proposed.  The Diocese of New York also proposes some activities to welcome the families of the victims and other people who want to seek a refuge of peace and prayer this weekend.

At the beginning of the week, Bishop Michael Curry addressed a message to the faithful recalling the moments that followed the attack: “There was a later moment when people came together. We were praying, grieving and also working together. Because in that moment, fleeting as it was, we knew with speed and vulnerability that we need God and we need each other.”

This weekend’s programme

The Chapel of St Paul, near the Ground Zero monument, will be attended by the city’s clergy offering their prayers from 7am. Liturgical readings and music will also be performed every hour. The chapel will also house an exhibition of some 9/11 artefacts.

In the US capital, a liturgical service was held yesterday, September 10, at the War Memorial Chapel. A commemorative Mass will be held at the Cathedral on the 12th, which will feature the funeral ringing of bells. The Cathedral will display, on the West Lawn and Walker Court, the pictures of the 343 firefighters killed during the 2001 attack. (FM)
