Chapels and churches in the Belgian city of Profondeville have been the target of vandalism in recent days.

Profondeville is about 90 km south of the capital Brussels and has approximately 12,000 inhabitants.

The city is shocked by the acts of vandalism that have taken place in recent days. Last Saturday, the church of St Remi, in the center of the village, was vandalized.

Two large images, one of Saint Joseph and the other of Saint Anthony, were thrown to the ground and practically destroyed, as well as one of the vases that decorated the altar.

A few days earlier, an image of Our Lady was also removed from its pedestal and thrown to the ground.

On the night of Sunday (23) to Monday (24) firefighters and the police were mobilized to control a fire that started in the chapel dedicated to St Joseph, at the entrance to the city.

Firefighters were only able to completely control the flames after a few hours. The fire completely destroyed the chapel and the causes will be investigated, however it is believed that the fire was voluntary and that the three acts of vandalism are related. (FM)
