Newsroom(15/06/2023 11:30, Gaudium Press) On Friday, June 16, the Catholic Church in Colombia will renew the consecration of the country to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The rite will be celebrated in all the country’s particular churches.
Ceremony celebrated in the country’s capital
In the Archdiocese of Bogota, the local Archbishop Luis Jose Rueda Aparicio, Primate of Colombia and President of the Colombian Episcopal Conference, will preside a Holy Mass in the Cathedral, in which a moment of profound communion and renewal of the Faith is to be experienced.
A special Eucharistic Adoration is scheduled for 9:30 a.m., as an opportunity for the faithful present to raise their hearts in prayer and contemplation before the Blessed Sacrament.
World Day of Prayer for the Sanctification of Priests
The Department of Liturgy of the Permanent Secretariat of the Colombian Episcopate prepared a liturgical guide for the celebration of Mass and a Holy Hour, so that this day may be celebrated throughout the country.
On this same date the World Day of Prayer for the Sanctification of Priests will be celebrated, being a special occasion for the faithful to show support and gratitude to those who have consecrated their lives to the service of God and his people.
Consecration of Colombia to the Sacred Heart of Jesus
In the year 1902 Colombia was consecrated for the first time to the Sacred Heart of Jesus through the initiative of the then Archbishop of Bogotá, Monsignor Bernardo Herrera Restrepo, in supplication for the end of the “War of the Thousand Days”. This conflict made the situation in the country worse every day, threatening to become an immense catastrophe.
It was then that the Archbishop of Bogota asked the head of state, José Manuel Marroquín, to have recourse to the Sacred Heart of Jesus asking for the union of Colombians. The Republic of Colombia was consecrated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus on June 22, 1902. Five months after the consecration ceremony, the war ceased and a period of peace began. (EPC)
