Colombian Constitutional Court decriminalizes abortion up to six months of gestation.
Newsroom (23/02/2022 8:55 PM, Gaudium Press) On February 21, 2022, the Colombian Constitutional Court took a step further in legalizing the practice of abortion in the country, allowing it up to the 24th week of pregnancy, according to the will of the pregnant woman. Abortion was already possible in the country when based on three reasons: risk of the mother’s life; malformation of the foetus and rape; abuse, incest or non-consensual insemination.
Faced with this fact, the Colombian Episcopal Conference spoke out through its president, Bishop Luis José Rueda Aparicio: “every pregnancy implies the existence of another human being, distinct from the mother, in conditions of helplessness and vulnerability. It cannot be hidden or minimized, since he has the right to be part of the human family.”
According to critics, the decision compromises the very foundation of the State.
In their communiqué, the bishops invited all Colombians to spare “no effort to protect and promote human life, even in the most complex circumstances.”
