Uganda prepares for the beatification of Giuseppe Ambrosoli, an Italian missionary who dedicated his life as a priest and doctor to caring for the sick.
Newsroom (25/08/2022 12:10, Gaudium Press) The Diocese of Gulu in Uganda has announced that it is preparing for the beatification of Italian missionary Giuseppe Ambrosoli.
The announcement was made by the Archbishop of the diocese, John Baptist Odam. The archdiocese has two other martyred Blessed: Jildo Irwa and Daudi Okello.
Father Giuseppe Ambrosoli was an Italian Combonian missionary. Bishop John explained that the missionary lived a simple life and that “his heart was strictly bound to God’s.”
Known affectionately as the “good doctor” or “saint doctor” by Ugandans, Father Ambrosoli was a physician, philanthropist and educator during his mission in Uganda.
The missionary will be beatified on November 20, 2022, in Kolongo parish, the place where he lived and worked as a missionary. The town is about 130 kilometers from Gulu, the See of the Archdiocese.
Missionary of Renown Sanctity
Giuseppe Ambrosoli was born in the Italian city of Como in 1923. In 1956, he arrived as a missionary in Uganda and settled in Kalongo, where he founded a hospital.
Until his death in 1987, Giuseppe Ambrosoli was dedicated to caring for the sick, especially the lepers in Uganda.
The Archbishop of Gulu explained that after the priest’s death, people believed he was a holy person.
Instructed then by the Prefect of the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints, the Archbishop encouraged people to pray and ask for the intercession of the Italian missionary.
“About two years ago, a miracle happened in the hospital. A lady with a malignant tumor was healed through the intercession of Fr. Ambrosoli,” Archbishop Odam said.
The beatification ceremony was scheduled to take place in 2020, but health restrictions have postponed the event. (FM)
