Cardinal Timothy Dolan, Archbishop of New York, has been invited to preside at a Mass of Thanksgiving in the Irish Cathedral, scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. next Sunday, August 27. He will also be the preacher for the celebration.
Archbishop Eamon Martin, Primate of Ireland, urged the country’s Catholics to take part in the celebrations, which will take place from Thursday to Sunday. For those unable to attend, the prelate asks them to unite spiritually through prayer.
History of St. Patrick’s Cathedral
The foundation stone of the Irish Cathedral was laid by Archbishop and Primate William Crolly on St. Patrick’s Day 1840. However, construction work was subsequently suspended and resumed in 1854.
The completion of the building was overseen by the then primate, Daniel McGettigan, who declared Sunday, August 24, 1873, as the day of its inauguration and dedication. The opening event was attended by a large crowd from all over Ireland. (EPC)
