The meeting of the Cardinals with Pope Francis is scheduled to take place on July 1st. The public consistory will determine the date for the canonization of fifteen Blesseds whose decrees were approved by the Holy Father on May 23rd
Vatican City (06/19/2024 12:31, Gaudium Press) On July 1st, at 9 a.m. (Rome time), Pope Francis will preside over the celebration of Terce and the Ordinary Public Consistory for the Canonization of several Blesseds at the Vatican Apostolic Palace.
Fourteen new saints
According to the announcement released by the Department of Liturgical Celebrations of the Supreme Pontiff, this public consistory will determine the date for the canonization of fifteen Blesseds whose decrees were approved by the Holy Father on May 23rd. Among them is Carlo Acutis, a well-known young layman, considered the ‘Patron Saint of the Internet.’
The other Blesseds to be canonized are: Manuel Ruiz Lopez and seven companions from the Order of Friars Minor; the lay martyrs Francisco, Mooti, and Rafael Massabki; Giuseppe Allamano, priest, founder of the Consolata Missionaries Institute and the Consolata Missionary Sisters; Marie-Leonie Paradis, founder of the Little Sisters of the Holy Family; and Helena Guerra, founder of the Oblates of the Holy Spirit, known as the ‘Sisters of St. Zita.’
What is a Consistory?
The term Consistory comes from the Latin ‘Consistorium,’ which is a combination of the words ‘con’ (together) and ‘sistere’ (to stand or be firm). In Ancient Rome, this word was used to designate the emperor’s private council formed by his closest collaborators. Nowadays, Consistory refers to the meeting of the Cardinals with the Pope to decide something important.
According to Canon Law, there are two types of Consistories: ordinary and extraordinary. In ordinary Consistories, all Cardinals are summoned, at least those present in Rome, to be consulted on certain important matters, usually occasional, or to perform some very solemn acts. In extraordinary Consistories, which are held when the particular needs of the Church or more important matters advise it, all Cardinals are summoned. (EPC)
