A man has been arrested by police for breaking into and vandalizing the historic monastery of the Shrine of Our Lady of Sorrows, also known as The Grotto, in Portland, in the US state of Oregon

According to reports from the Portland police and staff on-site, a man broke into the residence around 5 a.m. last Wednesday, February 28.
The Grotto Shrine, established over a century ago, attracts pilgrims worldwide. Managed by a community of Servite religious from the Order of the Servants of Mary, who reside in the monastery on the premises.
While no injuries occurred during the break-in, the vandalism inflicted significant damage. The monastery chapel, along with sacred objects and multiple rooms, suffered vandalism.
The culprit, identified as 57-year-old Paul Joseph Yauger, first damaged security cameras before entering the monastery by breaking a window. Once inside, he destroyed several glass items, crucifixes, and other religious artifacts. The chapel and several other rooms within the monastery were targeted.
During the intrusion, one of the residing priests, Father Leo Hambur, encountered a distressing situation with the intruder. Father Hambur was in communication with the security team when the man entered his room wielding a stick. Despite the threat, Father Hambur managed to flee. The intruder then barricaded himself in the priest’s room after grabbing a pair of scissors from a nearby table.
Law enforcement promptly intervened, leading to the man’s arrest. He was taken to a detention center in Multnomah County and is facing charges of trespassing and vandalism. (FM)
