March for Life Gathers Thousands in the United States

Thousands of participants gathered to support the right to life and oppose abortion. The March for Life takes place in a favorable judicial context aimed at restricting abortion in the United States

Newsroom (January 24, 2022, 12:00 PM, Gaudium Press): Thousands of Americans participated in the 49th annual March for Life on Friday, January 21.

The March takes place in a favorable context around the debate to repeal the “Roe vs. Wade” decree, which allows abortion in the country.

Jeanne Mancini, president and organizer of the March for Life said that participants “hope and pray that the year 2022 will bring historic change for life.”

Father Mike Schmitz, known for the American podcast “Bible in a Year,” also participated in the March for Life and expressed himself in an interview with EWTN saying, “There’s a reason we’re here. And the reasons have principles. The Church presented to the world 2,000 years ago this truth that every human being matters, that every life matters…Every person here matters.”

The march began on the National Esplanade (Mall) and ended in front of the Supreme Court.

Abortion in the United States

On January 22, 1973, the U.S. Supreme Court approved the legislation known as Roe vs. Wade by 7 votes to 2, allowing access to abortion until approximately the 24th week of gestation.

The Roe vs Wade decree is superior to local laws in each state, which guarantees access to abortion throughout the U.S. regardless of state laws

New Debate on Abortion Ban

Recently the American Supreme Court, with a conservative majority, aims to repeal the abortion decree. This occurs after the decision of the judges to welcome the analysis of a Mississippi law that prohibits abortion from the 15th week of gestation.

The State of Texas also passed a law last September banning abortion from the moment a heartbeat is detected in the fetus, which usually happens around 6 weeks or even before the woman learns of the pregnancy.

With the repeal and overturn of the Roe vs Wate law, each American state would be free to legislate abortion access. Almost half of the states already have laws restricting abortion.

The Supreme Court’s decision will not be known until June 2022, but six of the nine justices favor repeal. (FM)
