Professor Liu Zhiqing’s study covers the evolution of Chinese dioceses from the 16th century to the modern era.

Newsdesk (21/06/2023 20:40Gaudium PressChinese academic Professor Liu Zhiqing has published an updated version of his book titled “History of the Evolution of Catholic Dioceses in China.” The book, published under the patronage of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, provides a comprehensive overview of the history and development of Catholic dioceses in China from the 16th century to the present day.

The latest edition of the book includes new contributions and insights into the establishment and growth of Catholic dioceses in China. It is considered an important academic work that not only interests scholars studying historical events but also addresses issues relevant to the present and future of Chinese Catholicism.

The book begins its historical coverage from 1576 when the Diocese of Macau, the first diocese in the Far East, was established by Pope Gregory XIII. The book explores the history of Catholicism in China, covering topics such as the division of Chinese dioceses, which is a significant matter in ongoing negotiations between the Holy See and the Chinese government.

The book draws upon years of research, including archival sources, documents from religious orders, and testimonies from key figures in the Chinese Catholic Church. It provides information about the bishops who led the dioceses, traces the founding and development of each diocese, and documents the jurisdictions of districts, counties, and cities.

Professor Liu Zhiqing, the author, has been studying and researching Chinese Catholicism for over 30 years. He is a lecturer at the Institute of History and Social Development and serves as the Executive Director of the Institute for the Study of Religion and Culture at Anyang Normal University in Henan province. Liu has also collaborated with institutions such as the Chinese University of Hong Kong and Fu Jen Catholic University in Taiwan, contributing to the exchange of papers and research.

In addition to this book, Professor Liu has authored various articles on Chinese Catholicism, including studies on the history and current situation of Catholic dioceses in China, the formation of priests in the Anyang Diocese, and the impact of religion on Chinese society. His recent research explores the missionary history of religious congregations in China, providing a comprehensive account of the missionary work carried out by 27 religious congregations and missionary institutes in China.
