New Movie About Fr. Amorth the Most Famous Exorcist of Our Times

A multimillion-dollar film about the life of Father Gabriele Amorth will begin to be made this September.

Newsroom (01/08/2022, 3:45 PM, Gaudium Press) The figure of Father Gabriele Amorth, former exorcist of the diocese of Rome, who died more than 5 years ago, continues to interest people. Now the life of this man who died at the age of 91 will be made into a movie, in a multi-million dollar production.

The title of the film, made by Screen Gems, will be The Pope’s Exorcist. Filming will begin next September in Ireland, so it will take some time to open in theatres.

The director, Julius Avery, is enthusiastic about the project and about the leading man, who is an established artist, Russell Crowe: “It has always been my goal to work with Russell. Collaborating with him on the incredible The Pope’s Exorcist is truly a dream come true for me.”

It remains to be seen whether the script and production will respect the historical character, or introduce distortions not quite befitting of him, for the sake of resources to capture viewers.

Father Amorth’s legacy

The truth is that the story of the most famous exorcist of these times continues to attract all kinds of people.

Last year, “Don Amorth continues”, written by Vaticanist Domenico Agasso, was published. As part of the presentation of this book, and to explain the reason for the continuing interest in Fr. Amorth, Fr. Francesco Bamonte said that he “was undoubtedly an instrument that God used to bring to light, in the pastoral care of the Church, everything that concerns the practice of exorcism.” Fr. Bamonte is the current exorcist of the diocese of Rome.

Bamonte, the main contribution made by Father Amorth to the ministry of exorcists was the “importance he gave to the experiential formation of exorcists, through a pastoral vision in which theology and praxis converge. In fact, he compared the celebration of exorcism to a surgical operation, for which theoretical and experiential knowledge is required. In Don Gabriele, experiential knowledge was first of all an experience of God: the very sacrament of exorcism, in fact, is an experience of God, which can lead to a true mystical experience”.
