Nicaragua: Priest Confined along Bishop of Matagalpa Experiences Health Complications

The University Alliance of Nicaragua said that the health of Fr. Ramon Tijerino, rector of the Juan Pablo II University, is beginning to deteriorate.

Newsroom (August 15, 2022, 11:55 AM, Gaudium Press) Monsignor Rolando Álvarez, Bishop of Matagalpa, has already been imprisoned for 12 days in the Curia of his city on behalf of the regime of Daniel Ortega. The initial information spoke of 11 people arrested with the Bishop, but now there are 10 people detained with him since last August 3rd.

The list includes Ramón Tijerino, rector of the Juan Pablo II Catholic University of Matagalpa; Fr. Sadiel Eugarrios, first vicar of the cathedral; Fr. José Luis Díaz, also from the Cathedral; two seminarians, Darvin Leiva and Melkin Sequeira; a member of the choir, Henry Corvera; and two TV Merced cameramen, Flavio Castro and Sergio Cárdenas.

According to reports there were 11, but Sujin Membreño, from the choir of the Diocese of Matagalpa, was allowed to leave last Monday. He was the only one who was allowed to leave. The University Alliance of Nicaragua said that the health of Father Ramón Tijerino, rector of the Juan Pablo II University, is beginning to be affected, as he suffers from hypertension and needs proper medication. Last Tuesday, supporters wanted to provide food, medicine and clothes to some of the priests, but Ortega’s police did not allow it.

Although the Curia’s pantry was stocked, there is no certainty how long this food will last.
