Newsroom (23/05/2023 15:36, Gaudium Press) The Supreme Court of Justice of Nicaragua, under the total influence of the Ortega regime, annulled the title of Yonarqui de los Ángeles Martinez García, lawyer of Bishop Rolando Álvarez, the bishop condemned to more than 26 years in prison, reported the website articulo66.
This lawyer, also involved in the defense of other priests and religious, thus lost the possibility of continuing to practice her profession.
“Years of study and professional experience are not erased with a circular from a body complicit with the Executive in human rights violations. An act of cowardice for failing to silence a voice of those who have more than a bachelor’s degree,” the lawyer wrote on her Twitter account.
Attorney Martínez had achieved the release of several political prisoners, either by court decision or by the controversial Amnesty Law.
“I do not recognize such a resolution that was signed by three magistrates: Dr. Alva Luz Ramos, Dr. Juana Méndez, and Dr. Marvin Aguilar. They didn’t allow me to defend myself, and they didn’t allow me to enter the archives, until the moment that I was subpoenaed to hand over the titles of lawyer and notary public. I did not and will not do so. I do not recognize the illegalities that the Judiciary committed,” Martinez declared in a video distributed to the press.
The lawyer insisted that every day the submission of the judiciary to the regime of Ortega and his wife Rosario Murillo becomes more evident. She has been practicing for 17 years, and in the last five years, she has developed part of her activity in defense of political prisoners.
She is not the only one
Along with Yonarqui Martínez, the Supreme Court of Justice annulled the titles of 25 other lawyers who are critical of the Ortega regime. Of the total of 26 who were affected by the extreme measure, 15 were imprisoned and expelled from the country, in the group of 222 political prisoners who were deported to the US on February 9.
Also, 84-year-old jurist Vilma Nuñez, founder of the NGO Nicaraguan Center for Human Rights (CENIDH), had her title annulled. In addition, Ortega’s regime withdrew her Nicaraguan nationality, froze her bank accounts, and canceled her retirement pension.
