Pope Francis Calls President of Ukraine

The phone call allowed President Zelensky to renew his invitation to the Pope to visit Kyiv. 

Newsroom (03/22/2022 12:45 PM, Gaudium Press) Pope Francis had a phone call of approximately 20 minutes with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

The Holy See press service confirmed the telephone call without details on the content of the conversation.

It is the second time that the Pope has called the Ukrainian President since the beginning of the war.

In a videoconference with the Italian parliament, President Zelensky gave more details about the phone call with Francis. Zelensky agrees with the Holy See being the mediator in the conflict as a form to alleviate the “human suffering” affecting his country.

The Ukrainian President also reported on the problematic humanitarian situation and the blockade of humanitarian corridors by Russian troops.

The phone call also allowed President Zelensky to renew his invitation to the Pope to visit Kyiv, Ukrainian Ambassador to the Holy See Andrii Yurash confirmed. At the end of the phone call, Volodymyr Zelensky thanked Francis for his prayers for peace and Ukraine.

There have been several calls from the Pope for peace in Ukraine in recent weeks. Francis announced he will consecrate Ukraine and Russia to the Immaculate Heart of Mary on March 25.

The Pope’s first phone call to President Zelensky took place on February 26, two days after the Russian invasion. (FM)
