The Pontiff had already commented on a hypothetical residence in this Marian basilica. In spite of rumours, Pope Francis has stated that he does not foresee any resignation.

(13/03/2025 Gaudium Press) On Wednesday, March 12, the Vatican Press Office provided another update on the health of Pope Francis. It was reported that the Pope had a peaceful night and had resumed the spiritual exercises of the Roman Curia. His health continues to improve, though it remains a delicate situation.

Is an Apartment Being Prepared at Santa Maria Maggiore?

Amid various rumours, one report from Secolo d’Italia suggests that an apartment at the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore has been set up with medical facilities to accommodate Pope Francis when he leaves the Gemelli Polyclinic. The apartment would be fully equipped to meet the Pope’s specific medical needs.

Why Santa Maria Maggiore and Not Casa Santa Marta?

The question arises: why would the Pope choose to stay at Santa Maria Maggiore instead of his usual residence at Casa Santa Marta? If this rumor proves true, the interpretation is that the Pope may be contemplating a resignation. In his book La mia storia nella Storia, Pope Francis mentioned that, in the event of a resignation, he would not use the title of “Pope Emeritus” but would simply be “Emeritus Bishop of Rome” and would live at Santa Maria Maggiore, continuing his pastoral work.

Pope’s Own Words: Resignation Not Expected

Despite these rumours, Pope Francis has stated that he does not foresee any resignation. In his book, he clarified that there are no conditions for him to step down unless a “serious physical impediment” arises. Such a situation would be addressed by a formal resignation letter filed with the Secretariat of State.

Pope’s Wishes: Burial at Santa Maria Maggiore

Additionally, in an interview from December 2023, Pope Francis expressed his desire to be buried in Santa Maria Maggiore, near the Virgin Salus Populi Romani icon, where other popes have been laid to rest.
