Newsroom (12/02/2025 Gaudium Press) At the end of yesterday’s Wednesday audience, Pope Francis  was barely capable to use his own voice. The 88-year-old Pontiff also experienced respiratory difficulties during the Holy Mass on Sunday, February 9, 2025, in St. Peter’s Square. Due to these health challenges, he was unable to continue reading his homily.

Respiratory Difficulties During Mass

During the Mass, Pope Francis expressed his discomfort, stating, “I now ask for a little excuse and ask another priest to continue reading because of my respiratory difficulties.” The text of his sermon was then handed over to Archbishop Diego Giovanni Ravelli, who continued the reading.

Recent Health Challenges

This incident follows a series of health issues for the Pontiff. On Wednesday, February 5, 2025, during the General Audience, he mentioned suffering from a “strong cold,” which made it difficult for him to speak. Consequently, he requested Father Pierluigi Giroli to read his prepared message.

Bronchitis Diagnosis

On Friday, February 7, 2025, the Holy See announced that Pope Francis was diagnosed with bronchitis. Despite this, he intended to continue with his scheduled commitments, holding meetings at his residence in the Vatican.

Historical Health Background

Pope Francis has a history of health issues, including the removal of part of one of his lungs when he was young. Since becoming Pope in 2013, he has faced various health challenges, such as knee and hip pain, which have led him to postpone trips and cancel events.

Resignation Speculations

At 88 years old, Pope Francis has addressed speculations about his resignation, stating that it is a “distant hypothesis.” He believes he has sufficient health to continue in his role but has prepared a signed resignation letter in case he becomes unable to perform his duties due to health reasons.
