Today, June 21, the Catholic Church celebrates the memory of St. Aloysius Gonzaga, Patron Saint of youth and students.
Newsdesk (23/06/2021 00:45, Gaudium Press) Born in Italy in 1568, Aloysius belonged to a family of the Holy Empire. His father desired that his son follow a military career, but the future saint preferred to give up nobility that he might dedicate himself exclusively to God.
He joined the newly formed Society of Jesus as a novice, then went to Rome where he began his studies in theology. During this period, Rome was experiencing a great typhus epidemic that claimed the lives of many people. Compassionate to the suffering of the people, the young Jesuit decided to remain there and minister to the sick; he eventually contracted the disease and died on June 21, 1591, at the age of 23.
Quotes of Saint Aloysius Gonzaga
“All evangelical perfection is attained by the continual exercise of prayer”.
“He who truly desires to love God loves only with an ardent and constant desire to suffer for His sake.”
“In the twilight of our life, we shall be judged according to love.”
“He who is not a man of prayer will never attain to a great act of holiness, nor will he ever triumph over himself.”
“There is no surer sign that one is of the number of the chosen than to see that he fears God, while at the same time being tried with tribulation and desolation in this world.”
Prayer to Saint Aloysius Gonzaga
O Holy Aloysius, adorned with Angelic customs, I, your most unworthy devotee, commend to you singularly the chastity of my soul and body. I beseech you, by your Angelic purity, to intercede for me before the Immaculate Lamb, Christ Jesus, and His most holy Mother, the Virgin of virgins, and to preserve me from all sin. Do not permit me to be stained with the least spot of impurity; when you see me in temptation or danger of sin, remove from my heart all impure thoughts and affections and, awakening in me the memory of eternity and Jesus crucified, impress upon my heart the sense of the holy fear of God and inflame me with divine love, so that, imitating you here on earth, I may merit to enjoy God with you in Heaven. Amen. (EPC)
