Consecration of Colombia to the Sacred Heart of Jesus
The Archbishop of Bogotá, Bernardo Herrera Restrepo, initiated the consecration of Colombia to the Sacred Heart of Jesus in 1902 as a plea for the end of the “War of the Thousand Days.” That conflict made the situation in the country worse every day, threatening to become an immense catastrophe.
It was then that the Archbishop of Bogota asked the head of state, José Manuel Marroquín, to appeal to the Sacred Heart of Jesus for the unification of Colombians. He consecrated the Republic of Colombia to the Sacred Heart of Jesus on June 22, 1902. Five months after the consecration ceremony, the war ceased, and a period of peace began. (EPC)
