Newsroom (01/07/2022 09:15, Gaudium Press ) A terrorist attack has left eight dead in the eastern region of the Republic of Burkina Faso, in Africa.

According to a local source, the victims were attending a Baptism ceremony when armed men stormed the place and shot several people.

The attack took place in the town of Sandiaga in Koulpelogo, in the east of the country at around 9 am local time.

Jihadists and terrorist attacks

Burkina Faso is a country located in West Africa.  61% of the population confesses to the Islamic religion and 19% are Catholic.

Since 2015, Burkina Faso has seen an increase in violence especially due to jihadists allied with Al-Qaïda and the Islamic State. Thousands of people have lost their lives and almost 2 million have had to leave their homes.

Other terrorist attacks also occurred on Sunday. A car carrying a number of women exploded when it drove over an explosive mine: six people died and two others were injured.

Military intervention

According to local reports, the country’s military managed to “dismantle three terrorist bases and neutralize about twenty terrorists” in the Bourguiba region.

On 20 June, the Burkina Faso army created two zones of “military interest”, prohibiting any allowance of humans to be present.

The region is believed to serve as a regrouping place for the terrorists. The civilian population has been given 15 days to leave the region. (FM)
