Praying with new eyes, also with the help of technology: from December 2, thanks to a webcam, the faithful will be able to virtually visit the tomb of St. Peter and the Holy Door of the Jubilee. The announcement was made by Monsignor Orazio Pepe, reading the speech of Cardinal Mauro Gambetti, archpriest of the Vatican basilica, who was unable to attend the presentation in the Press Room. Also unveiled was a new multi-purpose room inside the Fabbrica di San Pietro, which will host journalists for meetings and briefings.
The gradual “digitalization” of the Basilica, inaugurated through a partnership with Microsoft to create a “virtual twin”, also includes webcams, which will allow those who cannot attend the Jubilee to experience it “from afar”. This communication will not leave aside the use of social networks, “significant connections between the Basilica and Christians all over the world”.

The Vatican has announced the publication of a new magazine, under the leadership of St. Peter’s Basilica, called “Piazza San Pietro”. Issue zero of the magazine was presented yesterday, November 25, in the Holy See Press Office. Father Enzo Fortunato, director of communications for the Vatican Basilica, defines the project as a “communicative challenge”. The magazine characterizes modernity in the age of globalization, with an exceptional “editor”, Pope Francis himself, who personally answers readers’ questions. “Simple people, ordinary people: the young man, the father of a family, the elderly woman,” the Franciscan points out. The Pope’s first answer is dedicated to a grandmother who recounts the sadness of seeing her third granddaughter unbaptized due to her parents’ distance from the Church.
The magazine Piazza San Pietro, whose title was “desired” by the Pope, thus becomes a symbol of openness and welcome, recalling Bernini’s columns which embraces current themes and testimonies from prominent persons. Francis wants the publication to become an authentic means of communication which, as its underlying meaning suggests, “puts in common”. “Communicating,” explains Bishop Pepe, ‘is not just uttering words, but sharing riches’ and transforming them, through what is put in common, into a ‘listening that makes humanity grow’.
